Filter cloth wrinkles may appear to be a minor installation issue, but a folded or uneven cloth can interfere with plate sealing, create localized leakage, change cake formation and shorten cloth service life. If the problem repeatedly appears at the same position, the cause may involve not only the cloth but also the filter plate, cloth dimensions or plate alignment.
The filter cloth and filter plate work as one filtration interface. Troubleshooting should therefore consider both components rather than replacing the cloth automatically.
| Problem | Possible Result |
|---|---|
| Cloth trapped on sealing edge | External slurry leakage |
| Uneven cloth tension | Irregular cake formation |
| Fold over drainage surface | Restricted filtrate flow |
| Repeated rubbing | Premature cloth wear |
| Incorrect opening alignment | Feed or filtrate restriction |
A cloth that is too large can leave excess material around the plate surface. During closing, the loose section may fold or become trapped between sealing surfaces.
A cloth that is too small may be pulled excessively around feed openings, fixing points or plate edges.
Replacement cloth specifications should therefore be matched to the actual plate geometry rather than ordered from nominal plate size alone.
Even a correctly sized cloth can wrinkle if it is installed off-center.
Before closing the filter press, check that:
Feed openings align correctly
The cloth hangs evenly
Both sides have similar tension
No material extends across sealing surfaces
Fastening points are positioned correctly
If plates do not close parallel to each other, the cloth can shift as the pack compresses.
Repeated cloth folding on one side of the press can therefore be a symptom of a broader alignment problem.
Inspect the plate pack using the same approach applied when diagnosing plate alignment and leakage.
Incomplete cake discharge can leave solids attached to the cloth before the next closing cycle.
If the press closes over accumulated residue, the cloth may no longer sit flat against the plate surface.
Persistent cake sticking should therefore be corrected instead of repeatedly repositioning the cloth.
Filter cloth experiences repeated pressure, wetting, drying, cleaning and mechanical handling. Over time, its dimensions and tension characteristics can change.
Signs that the cloth itself may need replacement include:
Permanent folds
Elongated openings
Frayed edges
Loose attachment areas
Visible abrasion
Difficulty maintaining position
During chamber filling, slurry enters under pressure. If the cloth is not installed correctly around the feed opening, hydraulic forces can move or distort the material.
This may create a wrinkle that is not obvious before the filtration cycle begins.
A sealing surface needs consistent plate-to-plate contact. When filter cloth folds into this area, it creates an unintended thickness between the plates.
Increasing hydraulic closing pressure is not the correct first response. The trapped cloth should be removed from the sealing area and the reason for its movement identified.
A wrinkle does not always produce cloudy filtrate, but incorrect cloth positioning can create gaps or abnormal flow paths.
If wrinkles occur together with solids breakthrough, inspect cloth damage, feed-hole alignment and sealing areas using the diagnostic approach described for filtrate clarity.
Cloth matches the plate dimensions
Feed opening is centered
Filtrate openings are unobstructed
Cloth surface is flat
No cake residue remains
Sealing edges are clear
Fasteners are secure
Plate is correctly aligned
If the cloth is undamaged and the wrinkle resulted only from incorrect installation, it may be repositioned. Permanently deformed, stretched or damaged cloth should be evaluated for replacement.
Repeated problems at one location may indicate plate misalignment, a damaged plate surface, incorrect cloth dimensions, fastening problems or uneven cake discharge.
A cloth wrinkle is more likely to cause sealing and cloth problems first, but repeated uneven closing can contribute to abnormal loading. It should not be ignored.
Filter cloth wrinkles are usually easiest to solve when installation, cloth dimensions, plate alignment, cake discharge and feed conditions are reviewed together. Treating the cloth as an isolated consumable can leave the actual cause unresolved.
